Travel Vaccinations – Patient Information

If you are planning to travel abroad, you may need vaccinations to protect your health. Some travel vaccines are available free on the NHS, while others are only available privately.

Which travel vaccines are free on the NHS?

The following travel vaccinations are usually available free of charge on the NHS when clinically appropriate:

  • Typhoid

  • Hepatitis A

  • Cholera

  • Tetanus, diphtheria and polio (if part of the NHS vaccination schedule)

Other travel vaccines (such as Hepatitis B, Rabies, Japanese Encephalitis and Yellow Fever) are not funded by the NHS and may need to be obtained privately.

How do I book a travel vaccination appointment?

  • Please contact the practice at least 6–8 weeks before you travel.

  • You will be asked to complete a travel risk assessment form, which helps the clinical team determine which vaccines you need.

  • Once the form has been reviewed, you will be advised whether:

    • An NHS travel vaccination appointment is appropriate, or

    • You need to access private travel vaccination services.

Appointments and availability

  • Travel vaccinations require a specific appointment type and cannot usually be provided during routine GP appointments.

  • Appointment availability may be limited, especially during busy travel periods, so early contact is strongly recommended.

  • Not all vaccines can be given at short notice.

Important information

  • NHS travel vaccinations are provided based on clinical need and eligibility, not destination alone.

  • The practice may not offer all travel vaccines on site.

  • If your travel plans are urgent, you may be advised to contact a private travel clinic.

Need further advice?

If you have any questions about travel vaccinations or booking an appointment, please contact the practice or speak to a member of our reception team, who will be happy to advise you on the next steps.

If you have internet access, you can view your vaccination history using the NHS App and take this information with you when travelling. If you do not have internet access, you may request a printed copy of your UK vaccination record from the practice.

If you hold any personal vaccination records, please let us know what vaccines you have previously received so that we can ensure your medical records are up to date.

Please be aware that some vaccines need to be given well in advance of travel to allow time for immunity to develop. We encourage patients to plan ahead and seek travel health advice as early as possible.
